Bond, Bourne Again

I could go on and on about Quantum of Solace, but let's just say I liked it. A lot. Not as good as Casino Royale, but a worthy sequel (the first Bond movie in 22 to actually be a direct sequel, in fact).

This time around Bond is still rough around the edges, as the movie starts where "Casino" ends, and now he's got an addition to that chip on his shoulder - he's looking for revenge for his murdered love/betrayer. Not that he would admit it, mind you. Along the way, he discovers a secret organization bent toward nefarious deeds and a plot to control the water supply of an entire country.

And while most critics are complaining that it's more action than usual - even for an action movie staple that's been around for 40 years - I think it helps further establish this reboot of the Bond character. The guy is a tundra-eyed locomotive filled with hate. He's barreling through everything in his way to get to what he wants. There's plenty of time for the character to figure out what wine goes with what entree. For now, let's let him break shit.

Having said that, I am a little disappointed that twice in the first half hour I actually thought "I feel like I'm watching a Jason Bourne movie." Not just any of the Bourne movies either, but The Bourne Ultimatum specifically. If Bond begat Bourne and now Bourne is influencing Bond, we may have a problem down the line. Like a snake eating its tail.

But for now, I'm still quite happy with Daniel Craig, who is solidly proving to be Connery's equal. And while the Bond Girls this time around are fun (Olga Kurylenko has some kick as Bond's hate-filled counterpart and Gemma Arterton makes a memorable Goldfinger homage) the dame to watch is Dame Judi Dench as boss lady M. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm developing a crush on that woman.

Of course, this review is just my opinion and I could be wrong. Maybe I should watch it again. And again. Who's with me?

This is a better review than the last three I've read elsewhere online. Incredible sketch of Craig, too. I needs to see it more than ever.

I liked it. A lot. But one little kiss from Olga? Come on. Bond could have gotten a little sump'n sump'n more in my book.

I thought it was like Bourne as well, especially the running over rooftops. But great action and Craig is a great Bond. Also, that Bond chick was smokin' hot.

I haven't seen the movie yet. How is Sean Connery in it?

Get off my lawn, you damn neighbor kids!

Craig rocks the shit as Bond, IMO. I loved it as well. And yes, the scenes on the roof top and jumping from balcony to balcony resembled Bourne, a lot. But overall, a great sequel and I look forward to seeing Craig break shit for a few more movies.

I haven't seen it yet, but more action is always good in my opinion.

Is Daniel Craig in those tiny swim trunks again? (Please, Lord, let DC appear in the swim trunks again.)

I'm with Josh... By the way, do they still play the organ in the front of the theater, or did that go out with the "talkies"?

I haven't really liked a Bond movie since Sean Connery was 007.

*sigh*

But since you say it's good, I may have to take your word for it and give it a look-see.

Judi's always the best/strongest woman in a film.

I'm glad to hear you liked this. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Remember when England was going nuts over Craig being cast as the new Bond? I always sort of loved the idea that they cast Craig. I thought he was a great off-kilter choice.

You had me at "Daniel Craig"...

(Yes, I shamelessly stole that from you-you being the king an all)

IHOB: I LOVE Daniel Craig as Bond and that was pretty hard to do given that I am a Sean woman through and through. And I day dream of being Vespa in my next life. (Don't spoil it for me, though. Right now I am too broke to see it in the theater, so I am waiting on the Red Box video release. Who knew Blockbuster had gotten so high priced?)

P.s. Oink at the Fernando, if the Evil Hog ever returns.

We've got a little ouroboros action going with the Bond/Bourne/Bond thing.

Maybe he should change his name to Bonde.

As long as Daniel is Bond I will pay to go to the theatres to see these movies. Holy Crap that guy is hot. But I grew up reading Bond books (my dad was a huge fan) so I would love these movies no matter. That being said I have not seen this one yet so count me in ifyou go a second time. You might want to sit a couple of seats away in case I get too "excited".

i went to see it opening night, which meant i had to deal with stupid teenage boys and puking 20 somethings. and it was worth every obstacle. LOVED the movie, even if the camera work annoyed me in a few places. (i know it is an action movie...quit shaking the camera and doing the whole cut to this, cut to that, cut to this while practically screaming ACTION MOVIE! ugggh.)

so i am totally in love with dc as bond. and i totally agree that he is thisclose to connery level. bet one more great performance and he might vault into the lead. sigh.
